Where I Was, How I Did it and What I'm Doing Now.

Okay, here's the whole story. Last October I took a look at myself. I realized I had let myself get to the point where moving had become an issue. I was at the point where doing simple things like getting up off the floor, walking, personal hygiene and getting in and out of chairs was difficult. It had to stop. I couldn't find a scale to weigh myself. I was probably eating between 5,000-7,000 calories a day. (My Doctor and I recently estimated my weight at around 410 lbs. Just an educated guess). I decided to replace my daily lunch ritual of a double cheeseburger and large fries with salad or veggies and chicken. It worked for about a month. After that month I had dropped to 397 lbs. Hooray! Just that simple switch had got me down to a point where it wouldn't take a cherry picker and a construction crew to lift me up when I fell.
I tried to not fall back into my old eating habits in November. Holidays are a bitch. Candy, huge dinners, football all are traps for me. December came along and I had done okay. Down to around 385. I wasn't feeling any better though. I should have seen the signs but people who work in the medical field seldom ever self diagnose when they need to. I had been extremely thirsty, urinating every 20-30 minutes and was constantly hungry. I also had a constant headache. I honestly thought I was just dehydrated. Then "The Day" happened.
Woke up feeling like crap. Wife and I went to a meeting and ate Ihop for breakfast. All-U-can eat pancakes was my healthy choice. Felt like total shit. Went in to work and immediately checked my blood sugar. 437! To be continued...

Some pics

Just some pics from over the past year. Going to hit the reset button on the blog but not sure which direction I'm going to take it. It's been and awesome experience losing this weight and I am ready to drop the rest of it.

Day 7 The Check Up

No post during Christmas. Been steadily dropping the levels. Saw the Doc for my one week check up today. He was impressed. Said my fasting levels needed to come down about 20 points or so but otherwise he was happy with the progress. Blood pressure is still good. Cholesterol is looking kinda rough. No meds yet but, if I can't get them into better alignment in three months, it's gonna be statin city. Whatever. I expect to see the levels fall by then. Nutritionist tomorrow and gym this week. Let the ass kicking begin.

Day 3 Kiss My Ass

After yesterdays Zephyr ride, I decided to be a good soldier. Dropped a few points but I am down to my last strip. I am also getting aggrivated with some folks. The ones who hear my blood suger numbers and say shit like "Ooh, that's too high". People, my CBG was 472 three days ago. I think good progress is being made. I am learning how to eat all over again. Kiss my naturally sweetened white ass! I am not talking to you folks who genuinely are concerned about The Moustache. I appreciate the support. Dinnertime. Merry Christmas.

Day 2 roller coaster

Continued my drop early in the day. Made it down to 162 at 2:30. Then I cheated a bit. Half a chicken strip and an egg roll. Then made the Big mistake. I fell asleep right after dinner. 215 at bedtime. Lesson learned.

Drop it Like it's Hot

Man, these meds work. Went from 472 to 249 last night. Woke up this A.M. and was fasting for CMB and Lipid panel draws. I fully expect to be on another med next week for the cholesterol. Finally got to eat at 10:30. post lunch check was at 218! Man I love seeing the numbers drop. Snacked on pecans and veggies this afternoon. Chicken soft tacos for dinner.

Feel stronger today. The confusion and vision issues are starting to subside. What a difference 24 hours makes. Also got a call from the nutritionist. Will call them back and set up an appointment with them ASAP. I am pretty sure I know what to eat but, think some more guidance is in order.

I need some input. Where do you like to eat healthy for lunch? Not just salads, but truly excellent restaurants in the area that have killer food for the insulin deprived.

That's about it for today. Feeling positive and looking forward to the changes to come.

Day 0

Welcome to day 0, eh. This is the day I was officially labeled a Type II diabetic. I've probably been borderline for years and have felt like crap for the better part of a week but, today I visited my doc and he bestowed the title. It went kinda like this:

Doc: I don't know how else to say it; you have diabetes.
Me: I kinda figured.
Doc: So, here's the question, what do we do about it. Really, I have no idea, what do you do next?
Me: Well, guess I have to switch from beer to vodka
Doc: It's a start.

You see, I've kinda been waiting for this to happen. The diabeetus runs through both sides of my family. I figured, I'm going to wind up with it, anyway, why not have fun while I can. So I ate whatever I wanted, drank like I was a college freshmen and avoided exercise like Super models avoid sammiches.

So, this is my blog about how I make the turnaround. Get my body, my brain and my life back into fighting shape.
